What exactly is the effect of violent images in kids’ television shows, movies and even video games? Research shows that parents are concerned – in fact, the majority of parents would support a move toward less violence in children’s media. Whether or not their fears are justified, it is clear that parents want a family friendly change in popular culture. They are concerned that the viewing of gory violent acts, aggression, killing, and crime will encourage aggression in their children or their children’s friends. They are also afraid that violent media for adults contributes to crime that involves violence against children. Though most adults are aware that violence in today’s world is a complicated issue that has a variety of different causes, many feel that limiting graphic media would be one valuable step toward eliminating crime.

Although there is a lot of skepticism involving the effect of media on real life violence, as it turns out, these parents’ fears are actually very justifiable. Extensive research now proves that violent movies and shows have multiple effects on their viewers, and young children are especially vulnerable. Young kids have trouble separating reality and fantasy. They are impressionable and they learn by imitating the behavior they observe in their parents, caregivers, family, friends, siblings, and now, media. Studies prove that kids who watch violence on television learn the same lesson as kids who are subject to physical punishment: that aggression is a good way to solve problems.

What this research indicates is that kids who view crime and aggression on television show an increase in anti-social or aggressive actions, are jaded toward violence and suffering in real life as well as in television, and see violence as a problem-solving method. The American Psychological Association has stated that exposure to violent media as a child can help predict whether or not a person will become a violent young adult. There are many factors that contribute to this connection. If an aggressive character is good looking, successful, or portrayed realistically, a child is more likely to identify with that character and to behave aggressively themselves. If this villain gets away with his crimes then that too increases the risk.

Thankfully, parents have a lot of control when it comes to what their children view on television. There are guidelines in place for television shows, and each show comes with a rating to help parents determine which shows are appropriate for their kids. While violence may never be eliminated from the small screen, parents can control what their kids watch. Parental controls on your television can help you be sure that your kids aren’t watching anything overly violent. Before your child visits a friend’s house, don’t be afraid to call the friend’s parents and discuss your feelings about violent television.
