As History Unfolds: Archery

There are several scholars that trace archery’s origins all the way back to what was known as the Aurignacian era, which was roughly twenty five thousand years before modern times. Most likely, the bow originated for use within hunting and then it was adopted to be used as a warfare tool. Eventually, the bows are what replaced the atlatl, and was used as a predominant means for launching the projectiles.

The classical civilizations were able to field very large quantities of archers within their armies; at the time, archery was a very important hunting and military skill that was before the actual use of gunpowder. The arrows were able to prove themselves as being destructive when used against enemy formations and it was the use of archers that would often prove to be decisive. A mounted horse archer was able to combine the range with mobility and speed. Archery was also prominently figured within the mythologies of several cultures.

Archery in Egypt

As early as just five thousand years ago, the ancient Egyptian people were able to take to archery. By the time surrounding the earliest pharaohs, archery was considered widespread and it was practiced for both the use in hunting and in warfare. Within history, the Egyptians used archery against the ancient Persians, which were only equipped with slingshots and spears at the current time. Some of the legendary figures from the Thebes tombs are depicted through giving some lessons within archery. There are also some Egyptian deities that are also considered to be connected in some way shape or form to archery.

Archery in Mesopotamia

Both the Babylonians and the Assyrians used the bow and the arrow extensively; in the Old Testament that are several references to archery as a skill that was identified alongside of the ancient Hebrews. The Kassites Chariot warriors also heavily relied on the bow. The texts of Nuzi detail the bows as well as the number of arrows that were assigned to each chariot crew. To the role of the chariot that was light and horse drawn as a warfare vehicle, archery was considered to be an essential.

Archery within the Indian Subcontinent

Up until the advent of Islam, the bow alongside of the arrow, constituted the Vedic period’s classical Indian warfare weapon. Often on the war chariots, the Aryans also use bow and arrows. There are some Rigvedic hymns that place an emphasis on the actual use of archery. Some of the detailed accounts pertaining to training methodologies within early India are known to concern archery and they are considered to be an essential martial art skill within early India.

Archery within China

Dating back in time to the Shang dynasty, the Chinese archery use follows. The Chinese have been known to use war chariots that have archers. The Zhou dynasty that followed saw archery contests being held within the presence of nobility. By the time that the end of the Zhou period came, the works on music, history, archery, and ritual as well as several other topics were being recorded on wood or bamboo.
